Have you been in a brand new community recently where there is trendous activity going on? Holes are dug, foundations are being poured, wood is being delivered, drywall is being hung, hardie board is getting installed, roofers are nailing shingles, plumbers and electricians are all over the place, water heaters and furnaces are being delivered in bunches?

CAMP WILLIAMS — Thursday’s groundbreaking for a $1.5 billion National Security Agency data center is being billed as important in the short term for construction jobs and important in the long term for Utah’s reputation as a technology center.
“This will bring 5,000 to 10,000 new jobs during its construction and development phase,” Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Wednesday. “Once completed, it will support 100 to 200 permanent high-paid employees.”
Officially named the Utah Data Center, the facility’s role in aggregating and verifying dizzying volumes of data for the intelligence community has already earned it the nickname “Spy Center.” It’s really long moniker is the Community Comprehensive National Cyber-security Initiative Data Center — the first in the nation’s intelligence community.
A White House document identifies the Comprehensive National Cyber-security Initiative as addressing “one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation, but one that we as a government or as a country are not adequately prepared to counter.” The document details a number of technology-related countermeasures to the security threat.
Hatch said Utah was chosen for the project over 37 other locations. He characterized the cyber-security center as the “largest military construction project in recent memory.”
Hatch said he promoted Utah’s favorable energy costs, Internet infrastructure, thriving software industry and proximity to the Salt Lake International Airport when working to see Camp Williams earn the bid for the data center.
The Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the project that is under contract to a joint venture between Big-D Construction in Salt Lake City, U.K.-based Balfour Beatty Construction and DPR Construction out of California.
“This project is going to give an opportunity for an awful lot of Utahns,” said Rob Moore, president and COO of Big-D and chairman of the Associated General Contractors in Utah.
According to Moore, construction workers have seen jobs in Utah drop from 100,000 in 2008 to about 66,000 today. “My subcontractors, suppliers and vendors are very appreciative of the work that will be available on this project,” he said.
Grading work is already under way for the complex, which is scheduled to include 100,000 square feet for the data center and 900,000 square feet for technical support and administrative space. The center is designed to be capable of generating all of its own power through backup electrical generators and will have both fuel and water storage. Construction is designed to achieve environmentally significant LEED Silver certification.
“It is so unique and so intensive,” Hatch said. “This will establish our state as one of the leading states for technology.”

- H - Honesty
Make sure you select a builder that has a reputation of Honesty! Ask to walk a home under construction, ask for an Option Price packet prior to signing any papers, ask if the prices drop while in backlog, would the builder discount your home as well?
- O - Observe
Look at the Community and notice the pride of ownership of the homeowners, take a look and ask the neighbors about how the builder did in building the house, and would they build with them again? Watch a home being built and look at the debris and trash left at a homesite while under construction.
- M – Models
Are the models decked out? It is hard to envision a home with all the options and upgrades that are in the model. Many builders put $80 – $100k into one model home, it makes it a challenge to find out what the standard features are, Make sure to find out what is “standard”!
- E – Energy Efficiency
What has the builder done to be more energy efficient? Low E windows? Rating on Furnace? Insulation? Do they test their homes to be energy efficient, truly? Ask!
- B – Boundary Lines
Are the Home Sites clearly Marked with pins in the curb and flags/stakes on the property lines? This is necessary to know what exactly you are buying! Make sure you know the home site size and where your property starts and finished!
- U – Under Construction
How does a builder build and who build their homes is critical in knowing that you are getting a quality home! Ask for the building schedule! If a builder does not have one, how do you know that the home will be right, and in a timely fashion. If a schedule cannot be furnished, be leery if your home will be done when they claim it will be complete!
- I – Investigate
Make sure you do your due diligence, there are many builders in the area that you should look at comparing each other to! Find out the price, quality, warranty, size and standard features and then make a educated decision!
- L – Lifestyle
Find a builder that caters to your lifestyle. You have different needs and desires in a home, will the builder adapt to your needs and allow for some changes that are necessary for you and your family?
- D – Development
What does the overall community look like? The builder cannot control everything in the community after the homes are sold, but they sure could use their influence and leave the legacy in place after the community is completely sold out! If the builder does not care about the community, do you think they will care about your home they are building?
- E – Experience
Critical Component of Selecting a Quality Builder….How many homes have sold and built in the area? How long have they been in business? Has any of their homes gone through the warranty process? Is the builder, still trying to get a foot in the market place, or they established? Make sure you select a builder that you feel 100% confident that has gone through the good and bad times, as they hold your warranty, make sure they will be around to cover your home issues!
- R – Rating
The Better Business Bureau rates all things. They are a private 3rd party group that monitors customer service complaints and makes sure the public is aware of the atrocities that businesses perform on the public. This is a vital component in finding s Quality Home Builder….would you have a surgeon complete surgery on you if they got an F in Anatomy? Then why have a builder with an F build you a home?
